Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of working married women on family relationships in Algerian society. It analyzes the repercussions of women’s employment on family cohesion, the distribution of roles between spouses, patterns of family communication, childcare, and the social upbringing of children. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical approach, relying on two main theoretical frameworks: the Functionalist Approach (Talcott Parsons) and the Symbolic Interactionist Approach (George Herbert Mead and Herbert Blumer). Field data were collected using a questionnaire applied to a purposive sample of 50 married working women at Mohamed Khemisti Middle School in Ain Temouchent Province. The results of the study revealed that women’s employment has a dual impact on the family. On the positive side, it contributes to improving the family’s standard of living and enhancing women’s economic and social independence. On the negative side, it leads to role conflict. The findings also confirmed that working women continue to bear the largest share of domestic and educational responsibilities despite their professional roles, reflecting the difficulty of redistributing roles within the Algerian family. The study recommends raising societal awareness about the importance of sharing family responsibilities between spouses, adopting supportive public policies for working women, and conducting more comprehensive future studies.
