Résumé
This study aimed to reveal the role of marital communication as one of the
most important psychological and social factors affecting the quality of the
marital relationship, by analyzing the extent of its contribution to reducing the
manifestations of emotional divorce between spouses. Marital communication
refers to the various forms of verbal and non-verbal interaction through which
feelings, ideas, and needs are exchanged, while emotional divorce refers to a
state of apathy and emotional separation despite the continuation of the formal
relationship. The study relied on the clinical approach due to its suitability to the
nature of the subject, as scientific measurement tools were used to estimate the
level of communication between spouses and their degree of emotional divorce,
while analyzing the correlation between the two variables. The results also
showed that weak listening skills, excessive criticism, and lack of expression of
feelings are among the most prominent factors that contribute to the widening of
the emotional gap, while supportive communication based on respect and
empathy contributes to enhancing marital compatibility and family stability. The
study concludes by emphasizing the importance of developing couples’
communication skills through guidance and awareness programmers, because of
this having a preventive and therapeutic role in reducing the aggravation of
marital problems and reaching the stage of emotional divorce.
