Résumé
This study aimed to explore the dynamics of body image and self-esteem
among women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), and to
identify the nature of the relationship between them in light of the physical and
psychological changes imposed by the syndrome. To achieve the objectives of
the study, the clinical approach based on the case study method was adopted.
The study included three women diagnosed with PCOS from the community of
Ain Temouchent Province.
A semi-structured clinical interview was used to collect data related to the
personal, psychological, and social history of the participants. The Body Image
Scale developed by Samia Mohamed Saber Abdel Nabi was administered to
assess the nature of body image and the level of satisfaction with it. The Self-
Esteem Scale developed by Coopersmith was used to determine the level of
self-esteem. In addition, the Rorschach Test developed by Hermann
Rorschach was employed to explore the underlying psychological dynamics,
conflicts, and emotional aspects related to body image and self-esteem.
ر
The quantitative and qualitative findings revealed a negative body image of
varying degrees among the studied cases, accompanied by low levels of self-
esteem. The results of the clinical interview and the Rorschach Test also
revealed psychological distress associated with the physical changes resulting
from PCOS, manifested in dissatisfaction with physical appearance, anxiety,
sensitivity to others' perceptions, and low self-confidence. Furthermore, the
findings demonstrated a relationship between body image and self-esteem,
whereby a deterioration in body image was associated with lower self-esteem,
with differences in the intensity of this relationship according to the individual
and social characteristics of each case.
The integration of quantitative measures and qualitative data allowed for a
deeper understanding of the dynamics of the relationship between body image
and self-esteem among women with PCOS. These findings highlight the
psychological impact of this disorder and emphasize the importance of
addressing psychological aspects alongside medical care when supporting this
population.
