Abstract
Communicative Language Teaching has been widely accepted as an effective
approach of the teaching of foreign languages in general and the teaching of English in
particular. It is introduced in order to improve and develop the quality of teaching and
learning and achieve the desire impact on students’ speaking skill, it is prejudiced in
favor of native speaker teachers by demanding a relatively uncontrolled range of
language use on the part of the students. The main problem underlying this work is
that many students are unable to carry on a spontaneous communication using the
target language which is mainly due to the traditional methods that are followed by
many teachers to teach speaking skill which focus on teaching a set of grammatical
rules. Thus this current study aims to investigate the development of students’
speaking skill through the use of communicative language teaching approach CLT.To
carry out this research two questionnaires were administered one for teachers of Oral
expression and another for second year students at the department of English at
Belhadj Bouchaib University Centre to identify and explore their attitudes about the
speaking skill, and the communicative approach. The results obtained from the data
which were analyzed quantitatively showed that the communicative language teaching
is a very effective approach to develop students speaking skill. Finally this study aims
at suggesting some strategies, techniques and procedures that may help teachers to
teach speaking skill and help English students improve and develop their speaking
skill.
