Abstract
Through my study, i concluded that psychological reading in
literature is a critical approach used to analyze literary texts and
understand their symbols and meanings from a psychological
perspective. It also focuses on analyzing characters through their
internal conflicts and psychological complexes. The colonial reality, or
the French occupation, appears as an internal constraint that
penetrates the psyche of the characters, as we noticed in the
character of Omar. The psychological reading revealed the
transformation of Omar’s character and how he became a model of
the child forced into early awareness.
In this novel, the writer Mohamed dib did not merely portray the
child’s life, but he also depicted the process of psychological
development under social and political oppression. Omar lives in a
state of inner turmoil and psychological alienation – not only from his
society but also form his own childhood. The novel is a precise
depiction of the formation of the self under psychological pressure,
where all his pain – from anxiety, emotional deprivation, and
repression – turns into internal psychological conflict. This conflict
pushes him toward deep contemplation about his reality and his
society. Thus, the child Omar in the novel serves as a reflective mirror
of Algerian society during the colonial period.
