Abstract
This research, titled *"The Colonial and Postcolonial Novel"*, by Nas Ali Al-Makhal, explores
the development of the Algerian novel within its historical and cultural context, from the
colonial era to the post-independence period. In the first chapter, the researcher examines the
Algerian novel as a form of symbolic resistance against the colonial discourse, which sought to
marginalize Algerian identity. He then highlights how, after independence, the novel became a
critical space for rethinking the new socio-political reality, especially with the persistence of
cultural and social hegemonies. The second chapter focuses on the novel *"South Wind"* (*Rīḥ
al-Janūb*) by Abdelhamid Benhedouga, considered one of the foundational texts of the
Algerian postcolonial novel. The analysis presents the character “Nafissa” as a symbol of the
individual's struggle against patriarchal authority and as an expression of identity torn between
tradition and modernity. The researcher concludes that Benhedouga does not merely
deconstruct the colonial legacy but engages in a deeper critique of internal cultural and social
structures, positioning the novel as a tool for consciousness and not merely political reaction.
