Abstract
This study explores the nature of literary discourse in its written and read
dimensions through the lens of Paul Ricoeur’s thought, employing a
hermeneutic approach that integrates linguistic, philosophical, and applied
analysis. We began by establishing key concepts, particularly the distinction
between text and discourse. The theoretical analysis revealed that discourse is
not merely a linguistic structure, but a communicative and meaningful act
subject to interpretation. It unfolds through the dialectic of event and meaning,
metaphor and symbol—enabling the reader to generate meaning within the
literary text. The study then moved to practical application, analyzing selected
verses from the poem "Ra‘d al-Bashā’ir" and the dramatic text "Innaha al-Ḥarb"
by Hussein Al-‘Iraqi. The findings demonstrate that discourse is not merely
composed of linguistic structures, but rather a semantic event shaped through the
reader’s interaction with the text via the generative illocutionary act, thus
transforming reading into a hermeneutic practice that creates meaning.
