Abstract
The memo examines The Eroded Fortresses by Mohamed Sari
through the lens of "literature of ordeal," a genre that emerged from
the suffering of Algerians during the Black Decade. It highlights how
the novel became a medium for documenting collective pain and
revealing the impact of violence on both the individual and society.
The first chapter explores the origins of ordeal literature in Algeria,
focusing on its psychological aspects and its connection to the novel
as a suitable form for expressing trauma and memory. The second
chapter analyzes the novel as a narrative model that reflects the ordeal
through its characters, language, time, and space .Mohamed Sari does
not merely write about the ordeal; he writes from within it, turning the
novel into a tool of resistance and a means of self and societal
reflection in a time of collapse.
