Abstract
This memorandum sheds light This study explores the topic
“Aspects of Syntax in Classical Arabic Texts – Rhetorical, Critical,
and Exegetical Perspectives”, by investigating the conceptual and
methodological foundations of what is known today as “Textual
Grammar” (or Text Linguistics) within the Arab linguistic heritage.
The research aims to show how classical Arabic scholarship,
particularly in the fields of rhetoric, literary criticism, and Quranic
exegesis, contributed to the early development of analyzing texts as
cohesive units beyond the sentence level, despite the absence of the
modern term.
The study is divided into two main parts:
A theoretical section that outlines the basic concepts of text
linguistics, and highlights the fundamental distinctions between
sentence grammar and text grammar.
An applied section that investigates manifestations of text
grammar in the works of major classical scholars such as Abd al-
Qahir al-Jurjani (in rhetoric), Hazm al-Qartajanni (in literary
criticism), and classical Quranic exegetes.
The research concludes that text grammar, although a modern
linguistic term, has deep roots in the Arabic linguistic and intellectual
tradition, evidenced by a sophisticated understanding of textual
cohesion, coherence, and contextual relations. The study emphasizes
the importance of further research in this field to bridge traditional
Arabic linguistic thought with contemporary approaches in discourse
and text analysis.
