Résumé
This study revolves around the thematic approach to the value of sadness
in the novel Sayyidat Al-Maqam by Waciny Laredj, aiming to explore its
psychological and aesthetic manifestations, as well as its emotional
dimensions within the fictional narrative world. The dissertation starts
from the realm of “literature of suffering” to analyze the concepts of
sadness and value in relation to their historical and political dimensions
associated with the wounds of the 1990s, showing how this pain-filled
discourse was formed. The study is also concerned with examining the
construction of the language of the two texts through the analysis of the
lexicon of sadness, multilingualism, the symbolism of characters, and the
semiotics of time and place under the weight of existential anguish. The
study concludes that sadness in Waciny Laredj’s works represents an
artistic language and an intellectual stance expressing the suffering of
human tragedy in the face of loss and alienation.
