Abstract
Due to its particular geographical influence and its history, Algeria benefits from a heritage
as rich as it is varied. To this end, special attention must be paid to its colonial architectural
heritage with a view to safeguarding and enhancing it by identifying materials and construction
techniques. This will make it possible to rediscover this constructive know-how, with the aim
of better intervening in the restoration of the building.
The lack of studies carried out on these constructive typologies and the interventions
(restoration and/or rehabilitation) makes us forget the existence of these masterpieces.
And for that we focused our research first on the typology and the architecture of the
building of the colonial period as well as the techniques and characteristics of their
construction, also we defined the built heritage and the various modes of intervention on the
last.
Secondly, in order to preserve this heritage, it is necessary to carry out rehabilitation
operations, but before that it is first necessary to know the methodology of the diagnosis and
the various origins of degradation of the buildings of the colonial era.
And finally we chose the city of Beni Saf as a field of investigation and research, thanks to
its history and its rich heritage of colonial architecture. The analysis of the rehabilitation of the
Beni Saf aquarium was our case study and the perfect witness of colonial architecture in
Algeria.
