Abstract
The current study aimed to investigate the contribution of family business governance to
achieving sustainable development through total quality management as a mediating variable in the
field study institutions, represented by family businesses located in western Algeria. To achieve the
study's objectives, a questionnaire was adopted as a tool for collecting primary data, and subsequently,
a purposive sample of 100 middle and upper-level employees in these companies was selected. To
analyze the obtained data, three statistical softwares were utilized: Excel 2010 for describing sample
characteristics, SPSS v.25 for studying the trend of responses of the sample individuals, and for testing
the study hypotheses, structural equation modeling using the partial least squares method (PLS-SEM)
was employed using the Smart-PLS v.4.1.0.3 software.
The study concluded with a set of findings, the most important of which are that family business
governance, sustainable development, and total quality management are present at a high level in the
family businesses under study. The results of the structural model assessment also showed that family
business governance has an indirect effect on sustainable development in the presence of total quality
management as a mediating variable. This mediation was classified as complementary mediation. It
was also found that family business governance has a direct positive effect on both sustainable
development and total quality management, and that total quality management has a direct positive
effect on sustainable development. In light of the findings, a number of recommendations were made
that would encourage family businesses to pay great attention to this topic.
