Emma is widely recognized as one of Jane Austen’s notably polarizing novels, the heroine is regarded as an immature, deluded rather than a psychologically complex character. Scholars had mostly studied it from a singular perspective as socio-cultural novel, where they explored Emma’s behavior within her society practically as a matchmaker, however limited research has approached it from a psychological lens despite this , the analyses were not connected to form a coherent whole of Emma’s psychology .This dissertation addresses this gap through an in-depth reading of Emma as a psychological novel, following her transformation journey from an illusory ,self-deceived to an aware self-mature character. Framed through psychoanalytic theories with close reading of the literary text, this research studies how Emma’s impulse to control the marital arrangements of her surroundings, serves as a symptom of a distorted perception. The analysis examines the pivotal moments serving as psychological conflicts throughout the novel, Emma’s reactions, interactions and the misreading of herself and others are interrupted as symptomatic of her psychological condition and signs for her unconscious motivations. This dissertation argues that studying Emma psychoanalytically goes beyond merely revealing her misjudged behavior but reframing the reader’s interpretation of this novel, presenting a profound understanding of Emma. The findings suggest that Emma presents a profound psychological portrayal of social control, self-deception and moral awakening, highlighting these not as her character flaws but as phases in her psychological journey, solidifying its position as one of Jane Austen’s most novel exploration of human psychology.
