Abstract
Venous first is a very frequently used process in hospitalization, however, it exposes the patient to an increased risk of microbial contamination and/or colonization that can cause an infectious risk or affect the patient’s health.
In this context of assessing the infectious risk associated with catheterism, samples of the peripheral vein catheters were carried out to isolate the bacterial and fungal microorganisms responsible for contamination and/or colonization in the service of child surgery of the Benzerdjeb hospital facility in Ain Temouchent.
Twenty-four patients benefited from the placement of a peripheral vein catheter with a microbial alteration rate of 54%. We isolated 13 strains of bacteria and fungi.
We note that the species Streptococcus occupies the first place with a rate of 34.1% catheter alteration, followed by Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus spp. with the same rate of 31%.
The bacterial strains Klebsiella and E. coli, as well as the fungal species Candida albicans, were isolated with an alteration rate of 8%.
These results allowed us to assess the risk of spreading infectious agents during care. Thus, the regular epidemiology of bacterial and fungal ecology of the service keeps its place.
