Abstract

The current study aimed to examine the nature of body image and its impact on the level of social adjustment among patients with multiple sclerosis, The study was conducted on four female patients at Ahmed Madghari Hospital in the province of Ain Timouchent, where a clinical, case-study-based approach was adopted, utilizing a set of data collection tools, including: clinical interviews, semi-structured interviews with the four patients with multiple sclerosis, and an interview guide, in addition to the following scales: the Body Image Scale developed by Zainab Al-Shakir (2002) and adapted to the Algerian context by Faraji (2023), and the Social Adjustment Scale developed by the American psychologist: (H.M. Bell), which was translated into Arabic by the Egyptian psychologist Mohamed Othman Najati and standardized for the Algerian context by Tawfiq Barghouti in 2009–2010. The results of this study revealed differences in body image perception among the cases studied. The findings indicated that body image can influence the level of social adjustment in patients with multiple sclerosis; however, this effect varies from case to case depending on various psychological and social factors, including the degree of acceptance of the disease and the family and social support available to the patient.
