Abstract
Algerian popular poetry is a type of Arabic poetry composed in the local dialect, addressing all societal issues. It acts as a mirror reflecting popular identity. Its main characteristics include: antiquity, realism, dialect usage, and anonymous authorship.
In terms of form, it includes quatrains and full poems. Regarding content, it is divided into two types:
• The Bedouin type, characterized by vocabulary related to the desert, nature, tents, camels... It includes several forms such as: El-Qoul, En-Nam, El-Martiya, and El-Qatta'a.
• The Urban type, which reflects evolution through globalization and includes vocabulary related to technology. It features styles such as El-Hawzi, El-Bouqala, and El-Houfi.
Among the notable figures who embraced this literary art are Ibn Mesaib and Ibn Qitoun.
Popular poetry serves as a record that has preserved all the changes experienced by Algerian society, safeguarding its traditions and customs through the dialect.
One of the most prominent researchers in this field is Tali Ben Cheikh, who significantly contributed to the study and collection of popular poetry. He conducted several academic studies, including The Role of Popular Poetry in the Revolution, Foundations of Thought in Folk Literature, among others. His efforts played a major role in preserving and immortalizing this literary genre.
