Résumé
Dissertation Summary
This research paper aims to examine a horrific reality facing humanity in recent
times: the targeting and destruction of civilian objects during armed conflicts.
Undoubtedly, attacks on these objects, on civilians themselves, and even on
human civilization in all its aspects constitute a grave violation of international
humanitarian law and may amount to a war crime. Therefore, the issue of
protecting civilian objects is among the most important issues related to the
protection of civilians and their cultural and spiritual heritage. Given the gravity
of this issue, the international community has sought to provide protection
through the Geneva Conventions and their two Additional Protocols of 1977.
These conventions explicitly stipulate the protection of civilian objects
indispensable to the survival of civilians and prohibit attacks on them. Anything
contrary to this constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law
and may rise to the level of a war crime.
Keywords: civilian objects, protection, armed conflicts, international
humanitarian law.
