Abstract
The Algerian legislator issued Law No. 23-05 on the prevention of drugs and psychotropic substances and the suppression of their illicit use and trafficking, in order to limit the spread of these crimes, especially among young people and children, by developing a new strategy to prevent these crimes by treating addicts through therapeutic measures.
The most important provisions of the law include tightening penalties for all drug and psychotropic substance crimes, as well as exempting minors from criminal prosecution if they undergo treatment before initiating public prosecution, and dividing drug crimes into three categories: felonies, aggravated misdemeanors, and ordinary misdemeanors. The legislator tightened penalties for all drug crimes, with the exception of crimes of consumption, purchase, or possession for consumption only. In addition to prohibiting all forms of consumption, dealing, and trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances.
