Abstract
This study analyzes the mechanical behavior of a welded assembly by combining finite element
modeling (FEM) under static loading (via ABAQUS) and cyclic loading (via AFGROW). The
objective is to identify critical zones—especially the heat-affected zone (HAZ)—and assess their
impact on mechanical strength. The results reveal that the HAZ exhibits stress concentrations,
plastic deformations, and damage significantly higher than those in the base metal, making it the
most vulnerable region. Localized stress gradients were also detected there, confirming the
influence of microstructural heterogeneities induced by welding. These observations emphasize
the importance of optimizing welding design and process to mitigate stress concentrations in the
HAZ, thereby improving the durability of welded structures.
