Abstract
Plastic packaging is one of the most important areas of industry, especially plastic food
packaging, which can adversely affect the quality of food and the preservation or release of
molecules harmful to human health. With this in mind, we decided to manufacture a
biodegradable, antimicrobial film based on a fermented extract of a spontaneous plant, the
nettle, known for its antibacterial properties, in order to ensure the plastic's resistance, we
synthesized polystyrene by radical route and then integrated it at a rate of 30% by mass with
the starch in a plastic. In order to reveal the antimicrobial character of the fermented nettle
extract, a comparative biological study of starch-based plastics and PS/starch based on
fermented nettle extract gave a very good result for the starch-based plastic (100%). A
retention study revealed that the starch-based plastic did not have a good retention rate when
compared to the starch-based plastic extracted from nettles. A rheological study revealed that
the 100% starch-based plastic should be reinforced for subsequent use in packaging. The
results obtained from this work are satisfactory and we plan to improve it in the future.
