Abstract

This thesis addresses the topic of feminist poetry in Algeria from thematic and stylistic perspectives, through an analytical study of the poems of Algerian poet Zahra Ghefif. The study is based on the idea that feminist writing in the field of poetry is not merely an expression of women’s issues or grievances, but rather represents a new consciousness shaped by the social, cultural, and political conditions of contemporary Algerian society. The Algerian woman, having emerged from a circle of silence and marginalization, has begun to assert her presence in various fields, including literary creation, which had long been dominated by the male voice. The thesis traces the historical development of feminist poetry in Algeria, highlighting its humble beginnings, often marked by fear and hesitation, to the emergence of poetic voices that affirmed themselves with strength and distinction through their unique style and diverse themes. Through her poetry, Zahra Ghefif has been able to express her personal concerns and defend broader human and women’s causes. Her poetry is characterized by high linguistic sensitivity, attention to emotional detail, and an openness to artistic and stylistic experimentation. The study also delves into the thematic structure of Ghefif’s poems, which range from longing for the homeland, glorification of the revolution, expressions of love, and portrayals of human and existential pain — all of which reflect a rich and multi-dimensional poetic experience. The stylistic analysis highlights the use of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, and symbolism, alongside a variety of poetic imagery drawn from history and nature. These elements contribute to a dense, meaningful text with deep aesthetic impact. The thesis further explores the expressive techniques used by the poet, such as interrogation, invocation, and negation. These are methods that enhance the text’s expressiveness and reveal an ongoing inner tension and a search for identity. The analysis shows that Zahra Ghefif’s poetry does not merely reveal emotion or suffering, but conveys a conscious, insightful vision of the world and a profound human depth. In conclusion, the study aims to highlight the uniqueness of feminist poetry in Algeria, which cannot be seen as an isolated or marginal phenomenon within literature, but rather as a fully integrated and reflective expression of Algeria’s socio-cultural transformations. Zahra Ghefif was chosen as a model due to the authenticity, poetic depth, and richness of meaning her poetry embodies, making her voice a true representative of the Algerian woman in contemporary poetry.
