Abstract

Domestic violence againstawifeis a serious and severelypunishableoffenceunder Algerian law. In recentyears, Algeria has takenconcretesteps to combat thisphenomenon and to protectwomen'srightsthroughseverallegislation and legalprocedures. Algeria'sPenal Code contains provisions punishing violence againstwomen, includingdomestic violence. The penalties for physical violence resulting in seriousinjury or death are tightened and the mostsignificantlawscriminalizingthisAct are Act No. 15-19 of 2015, whichis one of the most important lawsenacted to combat violence againstwomen.
