Abstract
The evolution of the concept of human rights in international law reflects
the significant transformations that societies have undergone in valuing human
dignity and the importance of protecting individual rights. This development
began after World War II with the establishment of the United Nations and the
issuance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, which laid the
initial foundations for international human rights standards.
Over time, the concept of human rights has crystallized to include a wide
range of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. These rights have
become an essential part of international treaties and agreements, such as the
International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social
and Cultural Rights of 1966.
The legal nature of human rights means that they are binding on states that
ratify the relevant international agreements. States bear obligations to protect
individuals' rights from violations and to ensure access to justice. International
mechanisms, such as the Human Rights Council and international courts, have
been established to monitor the implementation of these rights and address
violations.
