Abstract
Floods represent the most frequent and most damaging natural risk in the world and in
Algeria, particularly in Ain temouchent . The natural risk prevention policy initiated has
made it possible to develop a study methodology aimed at better understanding the
watercourses in order to take into account their functioning inland use. This reflection has led
to favoring a first level of approach to phenomena which is based on hydro-
geomorphological analysis of alluvial plains. This consists of identifying the natural flow
conditions of a watercourse according to its different beds and assessing the disturbances of
this flow resuling from human activities in the valley. This approach, which has not been
widely used until now, offers many advantages : it allows in particular a global understanding
of geographical entities and hydro systems where it is easier to identify the sectors that can be
devoted to urbanization and those should be preserved as a flood expansion field. In is also a
fast and inexpensive process insofar as it relies mainly on photo-interpretation and field
study. This thesis presents and explains this method which will henceforth find its place in
the framework of risk prevention plans (PPR).It will be useful to professionals and students
of the environment and planning as well as to any public concerned by the prevention of the
risk of flooding. Though this thesis, we have tried to explain the notion of flood risk, and
applied to the city of Ain temouchent the ‘flood ‘method to identify the areas most vulnerable
to flooding.
