Abstract
Childhood diabetes is a chronic disease very widespread in the world, the prevalence of
which is sharply increasing. However, the announcement of diabetes in a child usually causes
shock in his parents, knowing that the disease is often mentioned as a risk factor for eating
disorders and promotes many complications in the long term. The aim of this work is to
evaluate the nutritional intake as well as the influence of the latter on metabolic control after
analysis of some biochemical parameters. This study was carried out on a sample of 240
children including 120 diabetic children and 120 control children. The basic questionnaires as
well as the 24-hour reminder were recorded with the mother-child pairs in order to calculate
the nutritional intake using the regal plus. Also lipid balance, blood sugar levels and glycated
hemoglobin (HbA1c) were recorded. The highlight of the diet of children with diabetes is the
over expression of simple carbohydrates. Likewise, a disturbance in glycemic control has
been demonstrated. On the other hand, the lipid balance does not indicate any difference
between the two groups except for HDL-C which was significantly reduced in diabetics
compared to controls.
This study makes it possible to describe the food consumption of children with diabetes
and to assess the impact of this on glycemic control. Efforts are still needed to improve the
care and prevention measures addressed to diabetic children, particularly the most
disadvantaged.
