Abstract: | The use of venous catheters in hospitals plays an essential role in a wide variety of therapies, improving the daily lives of many patients. However, these therapeutic tools can be contaminated and / or colonized by yeasts, in particular of the Candida genus, hence a risk of infection, cannot be ruled out, since contamination by these tools considered as an early stage of healthcare-associated infection. Faced with this problem, we conducted a study at the EH Hammam Bouhadjer in the internal medicine unit, with the aim of isolating and identifying pathogenic yeasts of the Candida genus from peripheral venous catheters. Of the 20 catheters collected, six tested positive for the presence of a strain of Candida. The frequency of isolation of Candida albicans and C. parapsilosis is 35% each. However, it is 10% for C. famata and 10% for C. glabrata. .The duration of the catheterization maintained in place for more than three days is 65%. Alongside immunosuppression and antibiotic therapy, the placement and duration of catheterization present for our patients a source of fungal contamination, of which it is probably involved in the infectious process. To prevent catheter-related complications, strict hygiene measures are essential to avoid fungal, bacterial or viral contamination |
