Abstract: Supply drinking water became the most alarming problem of our time, since the demand for water grows while the natural resources decrease or tend to disappear. One of the solutions which can contribute to the increase in the water potentialities is the desalination of sea water or brackish water. The saline water exploitation can be performed by associating desalination processes to solar energy sources. This can be done using thermal and photovoltaic systems to distillation and membrane processes respectively. The several experiments undertaken around the world have shown that these processes can adapt adequally to renewable energy sources. The specific energy consumption is the most determinant factor in operation cost of seawater reverse osmosis systems in desalination plants. This research aims to study the optimization of systems performance with minimal specific energy consumption by using the most an advanced technologies with respect to system configuration, pumping system, membrane assembly and energy recovery devices
