Abstract: This work represents a study of code switching in The Algerian society, specifically in the department of English at Ain Temouchent University. The main objective of this research work is to show how English students switch between Arabic language which is a mother tongue and the second language English which is language of their field of study and also to find the reasons that push them to switch languages in their conversation inside the English department. We also observed that Algerian society is not homogeneous, where Arabic is official language but it doesn’t use it in its daily conversation ,due to the existence of other different varieties that are: Berber, English, and also the Algerian Arabic which make it multilingual country ,where other phenomena are generated that are: bilingualism ,code switching, code mixing ,and borrowing . These are the main elements that are established in this research work.
