Abstract: | In order to determine the medicinal plants used traditionally by the local population in the treatment of chronic renal failure, an ethnobotanical survey was carried out in the hemodialysis department at Ahmed Medaghri's Hospital in Ain Témouchent. The ethnobotanical survey carried out using a questionnaire, targeted 122 hemodialized people of different ages and sexes, including 36 patients commonly using medicinal plants. Thus, we have identified 29 medicinal plants used for the treatment of end-stage chronic renal failure (ESRD). The most cited species were Acasia seyal (Gum arabic), Pertroselinum crispum (Parsley), Allum cepa (Oignant), Thyme sp (Thyme), Ammi majus (Queen Anne's lace). The remedies are most commonly prepared by decoction and infusion and administered orally. The aspects of ethnobotany and ethnomedicine contribute to the safeguarding and the valorization of this natural inheritance and could help the search for new natural substances in the fields of the phytochemistry and pharmacology. |
