Two algorithms for reactive power compensation are presented. Both are based on controlling the voltage at the inverter output and fundamental frequency control. Both algorithms demonstrate that reactive power compensation is achieved by controlling the active power exchange between the grid and the DC side of the inverter. They are validated through simulation, using Simulink. Additionally, a prototype of a five-level converter is developed and applied as a static Var compensator. Practical results along with simulation results are presented.en_US
