Abstract: The objective of this work was the development of the new biocomposites based on sodium alginate SA, plasticized with glycerol and reinforced with bentonite particles. The preparation of an aqueous extract of a medicinal plant Inula Viscosa and incorporating it into plasticized and reinforced biofilms was our second goal. The results of the study show a remarkable improvement in the macroscopic properties of sodium alginate films after their plasticization and strengthening. The study of the effect of glycerol concentration on SA films showed that when the volume of glycerol increases, the films become softer, flexible and do not break easily but at high concentrations the films become sticky. The influence of the volume fraction of bentonite dispersions on the behavior of SA films has been studied and it has been shown that the stiffness of SA films is parallel proportional with the increase in the volume fraction. The aqueous extract of the Inula Viscosa plant has been successfully prepared and incorporated into plasticized and reinforced biofilms. This incorporation was justified by infrared spectroscopy.
